- This line opened in 1917. Construction to extend the line was carried out from 1939 to 1941 at the request of the military, primarily for the purpose of transporting aircraft to the Nakajima Aircraft factory located along the line. Planes manufactured by Nakajima Aircraft include the Hayabusa (codenamed Oscar by the Allied forces). Also at the request of the military, a freight line was built further beyond Nishi-Koizumi Station, the current terminus, but this line was closed in 1976.
Currently, it is a short local line that runs through the countryside. Its main users are commuters to factories along the line and students attending schools along the line. Nishi-Koizumi Station, the terminus, has signs in Spanish and Portuguese, as there are several factories nearby and many foreigners use the line.

A neat short line video with just about every kind of scenery you can get, except multi-track urban canyons and mountains. A fun ride!
It's a branch line in a rural area, used only by students and locals for short trips. However, I feel reassured when I see the line in good condition.

"Hon-" What means ?
In Japanese, the "kanji" have multiple meanings for one word, and even our Japanese people need 10 to 15 years after birth to understand the rules. There are many exceptions, and in those cases, we have no choice but to memorize them as exceptions.
The word "本（hon）" in place names generally means a "real" . "Hontou（本当）" means "real," so "hon" in place names means "original," "central," or "old."
So what is "Nakano（中野）"?
Naka = "中" = "central"
No = "野" = "field."
If we were to directly translate "hon-nakano（本中野）," it would be Old, Central, Field
It's a place with that kind of atmosphere even now. Not by the sea, but in the mountains, in the middle of a field.
We Japanese also imagine that it is a place like that from the place name.
Words that are opposed to "hon" in place names are "shin（新）", "higashi" (東), and "nishi" (西), with "shin（新）" meaning "new", "higashi" (東), and "nishi" (西). Of course "kita" (北＝north) and "minami" (南＝south) are also used.
There is no "higashi-nakano" next to "hon-nakano" which will be mentioned this time, but there are "higashi-koizumi" and "nishi-koizumi" next to a station called "koizumi-cho" (= Koizumi Town).
In Tokyo there is a place and station called "Nakano", and nearby there are stations called "Shin-Nakano" and "HIigashi-Nakano".
Of course, I'm sure there are similar examples of place names in foreign countries too.
For example, there are place names like "Old George Town."
